You should be aware that PostgreSQL is not like MySQL in regards to authentication. Throw out anything you know about MySQL. If you need to login with an alternate user you can specify it several ways. psql userdb user or psql -U user userdb If you need to use passwords you must switch your pg_hba.conf to use "md5" for the connections that your software will use.
