Have you looked in /etc/mtab? If so, what does it show? If > not, how do you know the drive isn't mounted? Hmm, very odd. I looked in /etc/fstab and it's just mounting my main, internal drive. No mention of the external drive. I have this situation develop with two drives now: an external USB hard disk and an 8GB flash drive. Both show up on my desktop and are inaccessible to programs (because they are not mounted) and must be clicked on to mount them. I know they aren't mounted because, when I hover over them I see the "Not mounted yet" statement.
