Why not do a bit of detective work?

Modify the xdg-email script ....

run_thunderbird()
{
    local THUNDERBIRD MAILTO NEWMAILTO TO CC BCC SUBJECT BODY ATTACH
    THUNDERBIRD="$1"
echo "$2" > /tmp/what
    MAILTO=$(echo "$2" | sed 's/^mailto://')
echo $MAILTO >> /tmp/what

and then see what is in what.
