Actually, because of the above, the sysadmin on the remote server has
set up the directory as an SMB share, and I am able to mount it from F18
with the desired permissions and using mount.cifs so my main concerns
have been addressed.

Thanks again, everyone!! I guess I should have posted a week ago and
then the solution would have been worked out quicker.
