I had a similar problem with fedora 18, and got it fixed by installing the package kmod-staging to enable the experimental driver for the realtek rts5139 controller.
You can check if you have this controller using the lsusb command.
After activating the card reader support I got another problem due to the fact that the reader kept detecting all the sdcards as read only.
After some googling, I learned that the read access switch detector is not that reliable and it end up detecting the wrong state. To solve the issue, you just have to move the lock switch just to the middle position between read and write.
