If you're planning to start doing backups to a flash drive, consider reformatting it to ext4. Most Linux backup software will use links to save space when the file hasn't changed, but you can't do that in vfat. Right now, I have a 16GB flash drive with 17.3GB used and 14.5GB available, which will give you an idea of how much more economical this is. And, if you're not planning on keeping (at least) /home backed up, you should.
