I have an external monitor working in Fedora 18, on an X220.

What happens when you plug in the external monitor ? Is not the display
mirrored across automatically ?

If you are using Gnome, check whether the monitor is being detected with
the 'Displays' tool under 'gnome-control-center' (System Settings in the
applications grid view). You can change settings for the detected
displays here as well.
