The contamination normally happens in the ~/.thunderbird directory. go in and save Your Mail directory and abook.mab file and Delete your whole .thunderbird directory , then restart Thunderbird and it will recreate a new .thunderbird directory then reinsert your Saved Mail directory and abook.mab back into the default directory and you'll be on your way.
The replacement mobo turned out to be DOA. Once we get that fixed, or replaced, I'll try that.
Of course you won't do this because your to scared you'll screw it up worst.
I've been doing things like that for well over 40 years. Why should I be worried? It's not like I'm deleting things right and left, especially when moving the folder will work just as well.
