But my point was that if Linux ever expects to become useful and commonly accepted it needs to work for 'the common user' in 'the common environment'. Workable without the need of incantations, magic scripts, candles burning on stone alters where chickens are killed and their blood captured in special stone bowls to just 'make it work'. Means? Install it and the devices are found and configured.
