No I think you are doing things properly, if Fedora cannot detect the
correct modes for the monitor (as shown by the output) then xrandr will
not help.  I would look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log for clues.  If you are
using KVM switches, that might also be a reason.

Here is an excerpt from my Xorg.0.log on my ThinkPad to give you an
idea:
