You might try adding the 'nomodeset' option to you kernel options, the
reason you don't get graphic boot is that you are not in a graphics
mode. You might also need to add the driver to the initrd, or activate
it there. This is one of those "fiddle with it" problems, but adding the
option is an easy thing, hit TAB during boot rather than editing the
boot file, if it works then edit the file.
Animations in splash have gotten boring, I wish they would use something
exciting like the FC10 boiling surface of the sun instead of the
"throbbing meatball" as one student described it.

I had already tested the nomodeset option: no improvement and I get an
ugly graphic when logged. I think that this is a regression as in F17 it
was working great (kernel maybe the culprit)
