I'm inclined not to agree with that. If it were "more traditional Gnome" it'd look like the old Gnome desktop, not like a copy of the Windows desktop, with it's appalling bottom-up start menu (as all the screenshots of Cinnamon depict, that I can find). Going by screenshots, Mate looks more "traditional." And, I think it's what I'm using on Fedora 17. I say "think," in that I've tried a few different things with Gnome on Fedora and Ubuntu, to get traditional Gnome desktop, again, and I can't remember which approach I did on which installation. I don't know if I'm "using it" or just that bits of it are installed. There's no desktop chooser (in the GDM logon screen) on Fedora to let me quickly see what desktop I'm using.
