If you are using an internal mail server of your University, and communicate over SSL, the issue could be similar to mine. You need to add the local CA authority certificate, before trying to add the account.
Same problem here, you can't add an account using SSL or similar with an self-signed certificate because Thunderbird will be stuck in an endless loop during the check.
