I've not done this in a while so you'll have to check..... On the server side you probably have root_squash specified in the exports file. I think that needs to be changed to no_root_squash. You have to unmount the file system on the client side, re-export the files system on the server side, and then remount on the client side.
Cat, dog and horse feeding time here ... no_root_squash seems to have fixed things since I need to be root to transfer the file I was working with. That may indicate other permission problems but it's a start anyway. I will keep chipping away ...
