Don't know the cause of your problem, but you might mitigate it by creating a .Xresources file in your home like this below:
$ vi ~/.Xresources
XTerm*background: #ffffff
XTerm*foreground: #000000
(NOTE: Above, you can specify colors you like)
Then logout and login, and your xterm should work
