Allegedly, on or about 30 October 2012, Teo En Ming (Zhang Enming) sent: > I have just installed Fedora 17 from the DVD. The GUI cannot display English > characters. All I get are square boxes. First guess - you're simply missing some basic fonts. You could add a few until you get text. You could install one of the desktop systems (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, et cetera), I imagine that they'd require the basic fonts. If the issue is simply missing fonts, it does seem like the "X Window System" group is lacking an important dependency or two. Another approach may be adding language support packages, they may depend on some basic fonts. I installed from the live disc, for the Gnome desktop, which only has a small subset of packages. I've added a few extra packages, but these are the fonts that I've got installed: $ rpm -qa \*font\*|sort abattis-cantarell-fonts-0.0.8-1.fc17.noarch bitstream-vera-fonts-common-1.10-20.fc17.noarch bitstream-vera-serif-fonts-1.10-20.fc17.noarch cjkuni-uming-fonts-0.2.20080216.1-49.fc17.noarch dejavu-fonts-common-2.33-3.fc17.noarch dejavu-sans-fonts-2.33-3.fc17.noarch dejavu-sans-mono-fonts-2.33-3.fc17.noarch dejavu-serif-fonts-2.33-3.fc17.noarch fontconfig-2.8.0-8.fc17.i686 fontconfig-2.8.0-8.fc17.x86_64 fontpackages-filesystem-1.44-4.fc17.noarch ghostscript-fonts-5.50-28.fc17.noarch jomolhari-fonts-0.003-11.fc17.noarch khmeros-base-fonts-5.0-12.fc17.noarch khmeros-fonts-common-5.0-12.fc17.noarch liberation-fonts-common-1.07.2-6.fc17.noarch liberation-mono-fonts-1.07.2-6.fc17.noarch liberation-sans-fonts-1.07.2-6.fc17.noarch liberation-serif-fonts-1.07.2-6.fc17.noarch libfontenc-1.1.0-2.fc17.x86_64 libreoffice-opensymbol-fonts-3.5.7.2-2.fc17.noarch libXfont-1.4.5-1.fc17.x86_64 lklug-fonts-0.6-6.20090803cvs.fc17.noarch lohit-assamese-fonts-2.5.1-2.fc17.noarch lohit-bengali-fonts-2.5.1-1.fc17.noarch lohit-devanagari-fonts-2.5.1-3.fc17.noarch lohit-gujarati-fonts-2.5.1-2.fc17.noarch lohit-kannada-fonts-2.5.1-2.fc17.noarch lohit-oriya-fonts-2.5.1-1.fc17.noarch lohit-punjabi-fonts-2.5.1-2.fc17.noarch lohit-tamil-fonts-2.5.1-2.fc17.noarch lohit-telugu-fonts-2.5.1-2.fc17.noarch mplayer-fonts-1.0-7.at.noarch nhn-nanum-gothic-fonts-3.020-1.fc17.noarch paktype-naqsh-fonts-3.0-6.fc17.noarch paratype-pt-sans-fonts-20100408-3.fc17.noarch sil-abyssinica-fonts-1.200-2.fc17.noarch sil-padauk-fonts-2.4-8.fc17.noarch smc-fonts-common-5.0.1-2.fc17.noarch smc-meera-fonts-5.0.1-2.fc17.noarch stix-fonts-1.0.0-3.fc17.noarch thai-scalable-fonts-common-0.5.0-1.fc17.noarch thai-scalable-waree-fonts-0.5.0-1.fc17.noarch urw-fonts-2.4-11.fc17.noarch vlgothic-fonts-20120928-1.fc17.noarch vlgothic-fonts-common-20120928-1.fc17.noarch wqy-zenhei-fonts-0.9.46-6.fc17.noarch xorg-x11-fonts-misc-7.5-5.fc17.noarch xorg-x11-font-utils-7.5-7.fc17.x86_64 I would guess that the dejavu* font* liberation* rpms probably form the basic English set. -- [tim@localhost ~]$ uname -rsvp Linux 3.6.3-1.fc17.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Oct 22 15:32:35 UTC 2012 x86_64 All mail to my mailbox is automatically deleted, there is no point trying to privately email me, I will only read messages posted to the public lists. -- users mailing list users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines Have a question?
