Try to ssh in from another machine. Look at /var/log/messages, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, dmesg, xrandr, while the machine is in this state. Also, if dpms is the culprit, do "xset -dpms" to turn it off, and then see if the problem persists. Turn the monitor on and off manually, since dpms will not be active to do it for you.
