The performance impact was only solved quite recently (GNOME 3.6). I
assume the assistive tech is still partly enabled somehow. Could you
make a new user, log in with that and play the same videos?

By default (new user), assistive tech should be off. It is something you
specifically have to enable (more than installing some packages).

Forgot how you can disable/enable that stuff, especially from XFCE…
above should at least give you some pointers.
