Why do you use startx instead of simply booting into what used to be
called runlevel 5?  I presume you have a good reason, and although
it's not likely, it might even be significant.

I had to face too many issues with the graphic modes in the past (even recently).
That way, I am at least certain to start a text session properly.
I do not think that it has something to do with the issue.
