I suppose it's possible that a 6 year-old P4 may not. I'm running a newer AMD processor here, so this may not apply to your CPU, but when I do "cat /proc/cpuinfo" I get (among other things) this output: flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt pdpe1gb rdtscp lm 3dnowext 3dnow constant_tsc nonstop_tsc pni cx16 popcnt lahf_lm cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8legacy abm sse4a misalignsse 3dnowprefetch osvw ibs skinit wdt ts ttp tm stc 100mhzsteps hwpstate [8] which lists pae near the start of the list. I'd suspect you could tell whether your P4 supports it or not by doing the same.
