In theory "dmidecode" will provide the data you need, in practice this involves BIOS tables. Most vendors can't get things like "putting the serial number here" right, so I wouldn't trust the tables on low end devices too far. Some of the memory vendors have flashy web sites you can give your machine info to and they'll tell you which of their products you can buy.
