From the man page, it looks like this is now the default option. It used to use rsh, with ssh being an option. There are security concerns with using the older r* tools. If I remember correctly, it has to do with the service you had to run in order to use them. (I can not remember what it is called - it has been too long sense the last time I had it installed/enabled.)
