Neither of which make large system administrators very happy on the whole.

Any automatic update scheme paints a very very large target on the site
supplying updates.

That however is a matter of ensuring a global disable is a feature of the
configuration that is easy for an admin to use (easier than firewalling
gnome.org to stop it)
