I do use Xfce (no desktop wars, please), but don't think this is a factor because the black-out begins so very early. Has anybody else seen anything quite like this?
I have. However there are a couple of caveats I have to mention though. I didn't notice that issue until the later 3.0 kernels and first on Kubuntu. It also only appeared to be an issue with the intel i915 chipsets and the EDID checksum code in the 3.0 kernels. It appeared at the time that the error message was being repeated to the console so often it killed the CPU. One of the side effects was a blinking screen just like you described.
I did notice it on F16 LiveCD on that same machine since it's the only one with that chipset.
With you running an nVidia chipset, I don't know. I'd at least look at the other consoles to see if any messages are spitting out.
