currently running ubuntu on mine but about to switch back to fedora
-- i probably went overboard and got an ASUS G74S; quad core i7, 16G
RAM, twin 750G hard drives (one of which i'm about to replace with a
128G SSD), 17" full HD display, nvidia 3DTV (which, like you, i don't
really need but it was available for next to nothing extra).
not cheap -- was around $1700 CAD a few months back. and not light
-- it's almost 10 lbs so you'll know when you're dragging it around.
but as a desktop replacement, it has no weaknesses.

p.s. don't be afraid to check out refurbished units. quite often,
something is labelled as "refurbished" simply because someone bought
it, changed their mind and returned it. that can sometimes make a
difference of hundreds of dollars in the price.
