Turns out this can be done although its somewhat scarier than usual http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upgrading_Fedora_using_yum#Fedora_16_-.3E_Fedora_17 It worked on my test box fine. The new Fedora kernel crashes all the time, the desktop is in fallback mode and also broken but the upgrade works fine. Now to pin down what has actually gone wrong and see if it is stable with the non Fedora-ised 3.4 kernel that ran stably before.
