So how do I get eth0 back without having to hit the problems those users encountered?. The ethernet ports on my mobo show up at em16 and em17

Can't I just create a symlink?

Discussed many times, but the trick is ti turn off biosdevname.

During an install, or during a liveCD boot, add biosdevname=0 to the kernel command line.

You may have to google a bit to get it done on an already installed system.

Good Luck!
