It may be that the drive isn't getting enough power. I've seen similar issues with external USB hard disks where they can't get enough power and reset a lot. Using a dual USB cable or external PSU fixes it but there's a lot of differences between machines. Other than that, I have an external Toshiba USB drive and that works fine - but obviously not the same model as yours.
