Try booting into the equivalent of init 3 to get a text console. (I'm not sure what the new name for that is, but I do know that if you append a 3 to the kernel arguments at boot, it still works.) Log in as yourself and take a look at .xsession-errors. I had a similar issue after a munged "upgrade" to F16 and it turned out that something was missing from gdm and using yum to reinstall gdm fixed it. That's probably not what's wrong here, but .xsession-errors is still a good place to check.
