Why /dev/cdrom1 rather than /dev/cdrom

The default (and only) CD/DVD device on my system is named cdrom1 rather than cdrom or cdrom0.  Why is this?  Is there any convenient way to change it?  The eject command has a default argument of cdrom.  Here is a list of the "devices" that access this piece of hardware:
$ ll /dev | fgrep '> sr'
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root             3 Apr 12 12:04 cdrom1 -> sr0
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root             3 Apr 12 12:04 cdrw1 -> sr0
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root             3 Apr 12 12:04 dvd1 -> sr0
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root             3 Apr 12 12:04 dvdrw1 -> sr0
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root             3 Apr 12 12:04 scd0 -> sr0
Thanks - jon
