I was under the impression that he was trying to find the latency of the satellite link and traceroute would give him the IP of the first router. And, judging by his response, he probably was.
BTW, I used to use traceroute (Or, more accurately, the Windows version, tracert.) daily when I did senior level tech support for an ISP to find out where the latency on various sites was coming from. It can be a surprisingly useful tool, within its limits.
