to rediscover the maximum screen resolution somehow?

Hi Phil:
Are you using Virtual Box? Did you install guest additions?
You misunderstand - I installed the system originally using qemu-kvm on
a PHYSICAL (not virtual) disk and then when I was happy that nearly
everything was working properly, I rebooted the machine as a NON-virtual
ie a normal physical machine.
