why do you think systemd needs the file physical?

it needs only to know how to deal with this scripts
and force them in compatibility mode and this is
what it does

take a deeper look at the status-output!

[root@rh:~]$ systemctl status network.service
network.service - LSB: Bring up/down networking
          Loaded: loaded (/etc/rc.d/init.d/network)
          Active: active (exited) since Thu, 19 Jan 2012 15:44:54 +0100; 37s ago
         Process: 8117 ExecStop=/etc/rc.d/init.d/network stop (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
         Process: 8281 ExecStart=/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
          CGroup: name=systemd:/system/network.service
