The kpartx command was originally created to allow mapping partitions on device-mapper multipath devices (it's part of the multipath-tools project) but when virt came along it turned out to be a very handy tool for fishing around in virt images. These days libguestfs/guestfish are generally better options for poking around in VM images (and even supports Windows device/path conventions for accessing Windows VM images).
