Instead, you did everything you could to start a flame war while complaining about how bad they are. There's a word for people who do that; in fact, there are several, but I'm not going to use any of them because I'm not interested in fanning the flames. (Besides, I've no idea which would be the most appropriate.)
Pointing out that he was expressing his opinion as though it were a proven fact was OK; we all do it on occasion, and deserve to be called on it. Doing it in a way that was almost certain to offend him was going too far, especially when you're claiming to be trying to avoid a flame war.
