I don't use GNOME.... But, how does that suggestion help folks that
don't reboot?
For them I would say use this script:

KDE 4 still gives one a persistent icon in the systray to remind you
that updates are available.
It's called apper and was made to work with PackageKit with yum,
and should also handle zif, if it gets pushed to the fore.
