Continuing the thread .... sigh :-) There's a thread concerning problems with nfs4 mounts where the UID and GID for a user were different on the client and server systems. As it happens, that applies to me. I moved my uid and gid on the server from 500 to 1000 and restarted the nfs processes on both server and client. Alas, to no avail. FWIW, the debug output.
