FWIW, you *could*, as root, drop to runlevel 3, rmmod the nouveau
drivers, do a "akmods --force" and have the kmod-nvidia driver
built, then do an lsmod | grep nvidia and see if the nvidia driver
was modprobed (I think the akmods build will do the modprobe). If
you have nvidia in at that point then you should be able to do the
nvidia-xconfig and return to runlevel 5.
