I had a similar thing happen once or twice with FireFox.

It turns out that there was some sort of goofy permissions issue with
the fonts in /usr/share/fonts

I did the following and got things working:

chown -R root:root /usr/share/fonts/*
chmod -R 755 /usr/share/fonts/*

This might be a bit of overkill on permissions, but I have not had a
problem since...
