If you do, Pulse Audio is probably defaulting to the wrong output. You either have to make the video card the default audio output device, or output to both devices. A quick check using Pules Audio's Volume Control (pavucontrol) Output Device tab should show you your audio output devices, and what device is primary, and witch is the fallback device. I do not remember how to set up to output to both devices. I tried it a while back, but changed my mind and sent system sounds out the sound card's analog output to a cheap pair of speakers. That way, I can still hear them when the monitor goes to sleep. (I have a monitor with HDMI inputs.)
