I suppose it's more that I'm trying to keep things as close to the default as possible, as I've found in the past that straying too far from Fedora's defaults can expose problems that wouldn't otherwise have come up. I was hoping that there was a simple configuration option I hadn't found yet. I'll try to bend kdm to my will in the meantime.
