No, gui login as regular user. reboot was needed to get to text prompt.

at that point, logs in /var/log/messages were cluttered
with the following runlevel 3 boot.
Rather than find the pertinent parts, I just ran startx from
the text session. I probably added sudo by habit for
system-ish stuff.
