That does indeed work.

[tim@blanche ~]$ sudo /usr/sbin/openvpn --config /etc/openvpn/client.conf

[tim@blanche ~]$ ping helen-vpn [On different desktop]
PING helen-vpn (192.168.5.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from helen-vpn (192.168.5.1): icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=223 ms
-----------------------------------

I thought I had tried this, but maybe I didn't do it as root.
