the advice from Ted Roche worked:

I finally figured out I had to run that command from the iMac,
not from  f14box:

on the iMac  I ran

   cupsctl BrowseRemoteProtocols=cups

then after futzing with the
iMac      Print & Fax preference pane in the System Preferences window.

I can finally see my  f14 printer from the iMac.
and printing from the iMac works.


All of this days of pain
because of that change in OS-X.

Save me  from future OS-X changes.
