On Windows theres a GUI tool that´s open source...

http://eraser.sourceforge.net it includes several data-erasing
standards to choose from.

For Linux there´s "wipe" but it shows it was last updated in 2004, so
I wouldn´t be surprised it it was developed for 2.4 kernels..

But perhaps you won´t get into dependencies hell...
