Obvious questions:  Is the firewire cable working?  Or the firewire port
on the camera?

Even if the camera's not recognised for what it is, it ought to get
noticed as some hardware, when connected.  (Look at the output from
dmesg after plugging it in.)

I've had minimal luck with digital cameras and computers, on any OS.
The hardware seems crap, and as for adhering to standards, or finding
the right codec...

I work in video production, and I loathe digital video.  The domestic
side of it is worse than the professional.  The simplest solution I've
found for converting video is a DVD/HDD video recorder.  Even then, some
cameras can't be connected via firewire, and we have to use analogue.
