if it is internal drive for your laptop, the biggest issue is form factor. Form
factor of the slot for your laptop, and form factor of the drive itself. Most of
the initial 1tb 2.5 " drives were slightly thicker and would not fit into
previous standard laptop bay.

Other than that. I've a 640 gb drive in my dell d620 (only because I could not
find a 1tb that had the smaller form factor size.) externally, I have used
western digital, and others, up to 2gb. Multiple drives, multiple sizes (1tb,
1.5 tb, 2tb) external 3.5 drives in usb enclosures (and also internal in pc
casings) without a single issue what so ever. They "just work". Both "green" and
normal drives. The "green" ones will auto-spin down when not in use. Saves
energy, more importantly, runs a heck of a lot cooler overall. negative is that
there can be a delay as it powers up after being away from the drive for a
period of time. The cooler running temp more that justifies that for me.
However, your priorities might be different from mine. :-)
