One of the things I was delighted to find in XFCE was that when you right-click on the desktop, the context menu includes the complete Main Menu as an option. It's something I remember from many years ago before there were panels, but I'd almost forgotten about it. Now, I never go down to the panel for the menu unless my mouse is right there because a simple right-click is so much easier.
