CTRL+AlT+F2 will not work well if you are not completelty logged in. As
the system boots when you get to the display that has the list of
kernels, edit the line putting 3 at the end of the line and then boot.
That will take you into init level 3. The you can fix the machine.

In /etc/grub.conf which you can access as root be sure #hidemenu is
commented out by the W# character and timeout=5 for example.
