There are 2 simpler (less extreme) solutions:

1. ~/.bashrc is not sourced when a user logs in. You need to source
that in your ~/.bash_profile or define your alias in ~/.bash_profile

2. symlink the firefox4 executable to something like ~/bin/firefox and
add ~/bin in front of your $PATH variable in your ~/.bash_profile like
this,   export PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH
